Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas

Sunday, November 8, 2020

It it not lost on me that the holidays this year may look different or even be completely non-existent for some. My family is still hoping to have a small get together for Thanksgiving, but of course, that could quickly change in the next few weeks. In years past, I've usually dressed up for Thanksgiving, but honestly, my standards have gotten lower and lower with each month of 2020 that passes. 😂 So there's no telling what I'll show up wearing this year.

This dress comes in a ton of colors and would be a great holiday option!

No matter what kind of Thanksgiving you're having this year, these four looks are guaranteed to keep you cozy and comfy while you stuff your face. Keep scrolling to check them out!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2020

Friday, July 31, 2020
Ahhhh, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. A craze that suddenly fills your Instagram feed with bloggers and shopaholics sharing faux fur coats, chunky sweaters, and suede boots in the DEAD of summer. I've only been shopping the N-Sale for the past two years, and I have to be honest, it's a little anxiety inducing. It's completely counterintuitive to be buying fall/winter items when temps will remain in the 80s (at least in Tennessee) well into October. And, like I said last year, "I hate that the power of influence makes you feel like you're missing out if you don't buy seventeen cowl neck sweaters just to put them away in your closet until December."

Topshop flare legs jeans were an N-Sale purchase from 2018.
Also, took this photo in August. V Sweaty here. 😰

Steve Madden OTK boots were also a 2018 purchase.
Worn these babies a lot! New version out this year.

Finally jumped on the Spanx leggings bandwagon last year.
I like to wear them with oversized sweaters and boots or make them more "athlesiure" by wearing them with sneakers, a tunic, and vest.

Even at the sale prices, I still find most N-Sale items I'm interested in to be splurges, so I plan on sticking to some advice I heard last year: To avoid overspending, feeling overwhelmed and wondering why the heck you bought so much stuff you truly don't need, focus on only purchasing two to three items you are really loving. And remember, nothing from the N-Sale is worth going into debt over!!! I cannot stress enough that most items you see in the N-Sale will be similarly recreated at cheaper prices by other retailers later in the season.

Last year I only bought two things and ended up returning one. The year before, I bought two items as well. While I've scoured the entire Sale Preview online, I plan on only purchasing the following pieces this year.

1. Barefoot Dreams Cardigan - $67 / Originally $114

I wanted to buy a Barefoot Dreams cardi lsat year, but I'm glad I didn't. I wasn't totally sold on the style of last year's versions (not to mention the high price tag). Like the Spanx faux leather leggings that I purchased last year, I'm honestly just interested to see if this sweater lives up to the hype. *Side note: the Spanx leggings were a hit.

2. Patagonia Vest - $70 / Originally $100

I LOVE a good vest situation in the winter months. If you have any winter/holiday sightseeing plans, a nice vest is the way to go in my opinion. *Taking a moment to weep over the fact that we aren't going to NYC in December like we hoped.*

3. Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Color Trio - $58 / Originally $87

If I do end up purchasing these, it will be the first time I've ever bought anything other than clothes from the Nordstrom Sale. The N-Sale offers several discounted handbags, accessories, make up products, and home goods. Fellow Cookeville local and beauty blogger, Shelbey Wilson (whose videos have greatly improved my limited make up skills), raves about the Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks. I'm excited to try out this trio!

A Few More Tips

As they do every year, Nordstrom credit card holders have the opportunity to shop the Anniversary Sale first. Your cardholder status  (Icon, Ambassador, Influencer, or Insider) determines the dates when you're allowed to shop. To all of those who don't plan on paying with a Nordstrom Card (🙋), Public Access to the sale begins on August 19th and goes until August 30th.

Historically, Nordstrom restocks some items that have sold out during Early Access. However, this cannot be guaranteed. Again, I'm not telling you to sign up for a Nordstrom Card by any means. Remember, if what you want doesn't get restocked, it probably wasn't meant to be! And, you will most likely find something similar later in the season.

Be sure to check out the N-Sale Tab I've created with all of my favorite sale picks this year!

Also, if you love something I've recommended and take the time to shop through one of the links that I share, I get a small commission from Nordstrom! Taking the extra steps to ensure you're using my links means the world to me and helps me keep Abbylish up and running.

Best of luck in all of your sale shopping endeavors! Can't wait to see how good we all look in the fall. Fingers crossed we can actually go places then! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 But seriously....

Lots of love!

XOXO,
Abby

My Favorite Outfit

Saturday, March 14, 2020

I’ve been thinking a lot about clothes recently.

Fashion and styling have always been high on my list of hobbies. I truly enjoy shopping and creating outfits, keeping up with the trends, and inspiring others. Some cute new article of clothing can actually make me giddy.

In an instant though, clothes lost all of their importance.

Last week, a deadly tornado ripped through my hometown, killing several, and completely destroying homes, my sister’s included. In a matter of seconds, my sister’s entire wardrobe was scattered across the city. She couldn’t care less. In the emergency room, the nurses literally cut the rain soaked clothing off of my family. As I ran into the ER, I saw their destroyed garments strewn all over the floor. I couldn’t care less. My sister and brother in law’s glasses were both blown off during the storm. In the ER, I gave my brother in law the glasses straight off of my face. I had just gotten new, perfect lenses without any scratches. I couldn’t care less.
I’ve pretty much worn the same no-nonsense outfit every day for the last two weeks. I haven’t styled my hair or worn makeup. I couldn’t care less.

I’ve experienced this overwhelming feeling of apathy towards clothing (not to mention The Bachelor, COVID-19, and the political climate) in the last two weeks. Suddenly, wearing cute outfits, notifying my friends and followers about sales, and yapping about my new favorite shoes just isn’t important.
Like, at all.
My family is alive. Banged up, bruised, and hurting both physically and emotionally, but they are alive. The same cannot be said of all of their neighbors.
I can’t stomach the idea of posting an outfit on Instagram with some stupid, cutesy caption. I can’t bear the thought of putting on scrubs and returning to work next week at the hospital. I’m not ready to start “being normal” again until the rest of my family can too. On the other hand, in this same few weeks’ time, while I’ve hardly been able to look at the clothes lining my closet, I’ve also realized the vital importance and even the healing properties of clothing.

My niece suffered a brain injury during the tornado and remains in critical condition. She’s been in the hospital for almost two weeks now with a long road of recovery ahead. Her nurses bought her a Frozen nightgown and the gaudiest bow (y’all, it lights up) for her 2nd birthday which we celebrated in the hospital, one day after the storm. These sweet clothes bolstered all of us. Friends, family, and even strangers have offered clothes to my sister and her family. Everyone knows the importance of literally having something on your back, especially something cozy. My closet remains full of pretty things, yet I keep choosing to wear the most comfortable and functional pieces. They just make me feel the best. My uncle made t-shirts with my niece’s sweet face on them. They encourage everyone who wears them and remind them to continue praying for her. In each of these moments, clothing brought me so much comfort.

I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting over the past few weeks (hence this post). Reflecting on my own clothes. On how my feelings about clothing have shifted so vastly in such a short time. On how I would feel if the contents of my wardrobe were littered all over town. And reflecting on how, by far, the most important clothes I’ve ever worn in my life (and I’ve worn a lot) are the clothes of Christ.

“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.”

Colossians 3:12-14 MSG

I was raised in church. When I was a kid, we were a “be there every time the doors were open” kind of family. I was brought up on Bible stories and was taught by my parents the never ending love of God. But there was a specific time in my life when there was a shift. When my faith was no longer solely shaped by my parents but by my personal life experiences. I chose to continue pursuing Christ because I knew that a life without Him was a life without hope. I chose to clothe myself with Christ each and every day in an attempt to further His kingdom and live a life that is pleasing to Him. Subsequently, by putting these "clothes" on every day, they’ve rooted me in faith and, in a way, prepared me for this moment. They’ve allowed me to stand firm in this most trying time and, though I still don’t understand why all of this happened, confidently proclaim God’s name. From the second I realized that the situation was truly serious that Tuesday morning, I’ve cried out to God for comfort, help, peace, and healing. I wish none of this ever happened, but I do not blame God. Like I shared in a recent Facebook post, I don’t understand why God, who makes the elements, allowed a tornado to plow my family's street the hardest while on it’s path of destruction. I don’t understand why my home and my life were spared. I question if there will ever be a day that I can make sense of it all. But my faith is not shaken. TO MY CORE, I believe that God is in control and that He works all things together for good. This is my family’s Job moment. And I pray fervently that we never have another one. But, even if every day after this brings some new tragedy, I will do my best to live out Job’s words:

“I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!” - Job 1:21 NLT

Today and every day I have left on this earth, I will choose to wear my favorite outfit: the shining armor of God.

XOXO,
Abby

Abbylish's Favorite Things

Sunday, December 29, 2019

So I realize I'm a little late...Oprah always shared her favorite things before Christmas. But that's like literally the only difference between me and Oprah.

Anyway, I had an idea the other day to share some of the things (clothing, beauty products, home goods, etc.) that I'm currently loving. I was initially just going to share five (as that's my favorite number), but once I got started, I realized I actually have a few more things that I think are really worth your time. Fourteen to be exact!

Keep scrolling to see the things I'm obsessing over at the moment. Best part: everything is $100 and under, and most items are less than $50!

1. Puffer Vest

Can't stop won't stop wearing (and buying) puffer vests. I now have five in my closet. 😳 They truly are just SO warm and functional. Not to mention, I just love a good layering situation.

2. Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops
Got a sample of this stuff as a free gift with a purchase from Ulta. Just started mixing it with my moisturizer the other day, and I really like it! It gives you skin a healthy, luminous glow. The shade I got is moonlight, but I'd like to try some of the more golden shades (sunlight or candlelight) for the summer.

3. Rechargeable Lighter
I went a little psycho over these this year. Bought one for myself and then bought one for like every person I know. They're just a neat (and affordable) gift idea for anyone in your life!

4. Spanx Faux Leather Leggings
I've officially drunk the Kool-aid! I bit the bullet during the Nordstrom Sale this year, and snagged the coveted Spanx Faux Leather Leggings. At first, I thought I'd made a mistake because I wasn't really wearing them that much. However, that's because I bought them in August, and it was the seventh level of hell so hot here in TN till November! Now that it's seasonally appropriate to wear them, I find myself rocking these leggings more and more often. They add edge to any look, and they're slimming without being uncomfortable! I've tried some cheaper versions, and there really is no comparison. Definitely worth it in my opinion...just be sure to get them on sale as they're $100 full price.

5. In the Stars Fragrance
Just started wearing this fragrance after hunting down the co-worker who was wearing it because it smelled so good. I was literally like a bloodhound trying to find out who was wearing this scent. When I finally got the name of it, I think I went and picked some up that night. It can be a little overwhelming at first, but as it soaks in, I find the fragrance very lovely.

6. Metallic Activewear Leggings
I've always been a firm believer in dressing for success...and that goes for your workout too. These metallic leggings are flashy enough to get you motivated, but subtle enough to wear them out for errands after you've crushed your spin class.

7. Pajama Set
Got these as a Christmas gift from my sister this year! I love a good pajama set (probably why I also gave a pair to almost every woman in my life), so these did not disappoint. My sister said these PJs reminded her of Kathleen Kelly from You've Got Mail, so naturally that makes me like them even more.
*A funny note: the tag on these jams says KEEP AWAY FROM FIRE in big red letters, so these may not be for you if you're a pyro. 😂

8. Sherpa Pullover
Bought this sort of on a whim one day, but I can't stop wearing it. The inside is the same sherpa material as the outside making this one of the softest, coziest, and warmest things in my closet! I also love that it's pretty simple and can be worn with jeans or leggings.

9. Isle of Paradise Tanning Drops
After breaking out last spring's tanning foam to find it green (apparently, self tanner has a shelf life of about six months), I was in the market for something new. I had heard of Isle of Paradise tanning drops and was intrigued, so when I saw a Black Friday deal for a bottle, I snagged it. So far, so good! I love that you mix it with your favorite moisturizer and that you control the darkness of your tan based on how many drops you use. The self tanner smell is mild, and honestly, it you mix the drops with a scented moisturizer, it's hardly noticeable.
One bottle usually runs at $29, but the link above takes you to a 2 for the price of 1 offer!

10. Brooks Running Shoes
I started wearing Brooks to work a few years ago after experiencing some foot pain and really needing some cushion-y shoes. I find the Brooks Revels to be great neutral, road shoes that perform well and are also pretty affordable (they're usually about $100 which is at the lower end of the Brooks price spectrum). I had a Physical Therapist tell me one time, and I've experienced first hand, that you kind of get what you pay for with footwear. If you're on your feet a lot, it's best to take care of them.
The Revel is on it's 3rd generation now, so that mean's the 2nd generation shoes are marked down! I own and love the black pair that I linked above...so sleek and go with everything.

11. Fur Lace Up Boots
I have always been resistant to this style of boot. I have slim lower legs but thighs and hips that don't lie, so this style of shoe always makes me feel like my legs look like baby carrots. 😆 However, I kept seeing fur lace up boots on other people this season and thought they looked so cute, so I just decided to get over myself. Miraculously, this pair hits me in a place that's not totally unflattering. And, I love the fact that they have a zipper, so you don't actually have to lace them up each time you put them on. #lazy

12. High Waist Ankle Jeans
I had been on the hunt for a while for a solid pair of blue ankle jeans. All of my skinny jeans are full length, and I'm sort of over the whole cuffing the ends thing. Just a personal preference. I finally found the pair linked above from Gap Factory, and just like all my other jeans from there, they are perfect! The Gap Factory "legging jeans" are stretchy, but don't stretch out. They're flattering and true to size (I always get an 8/29, and they fit like a glove). And the best part, they're so affordable! They're almost always marked down from the original price, and I don't think I've ever paid more than $35 for a pair.

13. "Indoorsy" Sweatshirt
Nordstrom had a similar sweatshirt last year, but it was always sold out. When I saw this one available at Target, I bought it immediately. I just thought it was so funny (and accurate)! I appreciate the beauty of nature and enjoy being outside, but you will rarely catch me camping. My idea of a hike is on paved "trails" wearing sneaks. I am who I am.

14. Dolly Parton's America Podcast
If you've been following along for a while, you know I'm a huge Dolly fan. Even in her 70s, she's still a total boss, and she's been very busy this year alone: co-hosting the CMAs, recording two new song collaborations, a new series on Netflix called Heartstrings. You could say I'm proud. 😉 While watching an interview she did with Robin Roberts, (I'm obsessed, ok?) I heard about a new Podcast called Dolly Parton's America, and I immediately subscribed. It's described as a, "9-epsisode journey into the Dollyverse," and I've loved every second of it so far. Even Greg has enjoyed listening to it! Even if you aren't a Dolly fan, it's an easy to listen to, interesting account of America today.

Casual Holiday Looks with Maurices

Monday, December 2, 2019

I LOVE dressing for the holidays, but I've found that there's a fine line between a little holiday glitz and looking like Kat and Garth.

Subtlety is usually best.

Luckily, Maurices is killing the holiday attire game. They have pieces to fit everyone's style, size, and budget. And the best part is, a ton of it is on sale today for Cyber Monday!

Keep scrolling to check out some of my favorite holiday looks from Maurices.
And don't forget to check out the Holiday Fashion tab on my blog that I'm consistently updating with more great holiday styles.

Stripes, leopard, plaid, and glitter...these are a few of my favorite things!
This reversible scarf and striped mock neck top were two pieces I knew I couldn't pass up. A black and white striped top is truly a great closet basic to have during every season. It's a perfect base for all of your layers and great for pattern mixing.

My 10-year-old self is so stoked that faux leather is BACK. I vividly remember the pair of silver pleather pants I wore on my first day of 4th grade. But, I digress...
These faux leather leggings are a "pull-on" style with an elastic waist, but they fit a bit more like regular pants. Dress them up with heels and a lace top, or keep them low-key like I did with a cable knit sweater and booties.

Lumberjack...but make it fashion.
In love with this plaid shirt/jacket! It's so perfectly oversized (in fact, I sized down to a small) and cozy. Now you don't have to steal your husband's favorite flannel anymore!
I paired it with a holiday graphic tee and duck boots for an outdoorsy look, but I can picture it worn with a band tee, faux leather leggings, and cool sneakers.

What's your favorite way to dress for the holidays?
Let me know in the comments section below.

Abby

What to Wear to Thanksgiving Dinner

Friday, November 8, 2019

Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. In today's fast paced world of Christmas decor hitting the stores in July (yes, I already have me Christmas tree up too), Thanksgiving often gets overlooked. But I like to see it as the kick off to such a cozy and special time of year. Plus I'd never skip it because the food is 👌.

My Thanksgiving look from last year!

My family has always kind of dressed nicely but comfortably for Thanksgiving. This is the time of year when I'm so thankful that low rise jeans are out and high waist leggings are in. Below are four outfit ideas that I would wear myself to any Thanksgiving / Friendsgiving event.

Sweater Season with Luxe Boutiques

Monday, November 4, 2019

Cue the angel choir, sweater weather is finally here!!
And in about 2 more months, I'll be wishing for summer again. Ah...the circle of life.

But, in the meantime, I'm going to be tearing it up in as many cozy sweaters as I can. I recently stopped by Luxe Boutique here in Cookeville, and racked up on sweaters. They have so many cute new arrivals for fall and winter!

If you haven't heard of Luxe, it's a local boutique run by two girl bosses who happen to be sisters-in-law. They offer unique and fashion forward pieces for the modern day woman. The employees are always so friendly and helpful. They offer great styling advice for everyday looks or for special events. Luxe opened a second store front in Chattanooga, TN. And, if you're not in Tennessee, you can shop online at www.shopluxeboutiques.com.

Sweater / Jeans / Similar Boots / Shades

Can't stop won't stop with the retro vibes. Flare legs are BACK, and I'm so here for it. They look great with this chunky, olive sweater. It also came in three other colors that are simply perfect for fall.  I sized up to a large for a roomier fit.

Sweater / Jeans / Hat / Bag / Similar Booties

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: you really can't go wrong with a "winter white" sweater for the cold weather months. This one is fuzzy, warm, and oh-so soft. It even has some blush undertones. Looks perfect with a pair of jeans, but I can also see it layered over a plaid button up or paired with a tulle skirt.

Cardigan / Cami / Jeans / Similar Boots / Necklace / Earrings

I'm a sucker for a good cardigan. They're truly so versatile. This cozy one from Luxe is perfect for work or play. Layer it over a cami and pencil skirt for work, or throw it on over a t-shirt and leggings for a travel day.

.

Check out my Insta Stories today to get more info on the fit of all three of these sweaters plus several more! If you head to one of Luxe's stores, be sure to let them know I sent you. If you shop online, use code ABBY15 for 15% off your purchase!

4 Looks for Fall with Maurice's

Monday, September 30, 2019

A few weeks ago, one of the managers from my local Maurice's slid into my DM's (in a non-creepy way) and invited me to come to the store and scope out all of the Fall arrivals. I have to admit, I was eager to go but not really sure what I would find because I truly hadn't bought anything from Maurice's since high school. The storefront isn't next to the other stores in town where I shop a lot, so honestly, I often forget about it.
I won't be forgetting about it again, though!

I was welcomed into the store by such friendly staff who truly love styling! They were super helpful in getting to know my personal style and recommending pieces that would fit that. They brought tons of cute options to the dressing room for me to try on. I so enjoyed feeling pampered by them and left with bags full of awesome fall pieces.

I created four fall outfits with some of the items I picked up from Maurice's, but you better plan on seeing several more. I've already made an order from their website (which often provides online only discounts), and because their fall pieces are both unique and classic, they can be styled in several different ways.

.

Look 1

Plaid Babydoll Top / Sherpa Vest / Floppy Hat / Fringe Booties / Wrap Bracelet

How cozy is this look?! Someone take me to a pumpkin patch already!
This plaid babydoll top is so soft and lightweight. I love the peach undertones in the plaid as well and think it looks so pretty paired with deep red (hello holiday season...).
This sherpa vest feels just as fluffy as it looks, and believe me when I say that this bad boy will keep. you. warm.

Look 2

Reversible Poncho

Fell in love with this poncho as soon as I saw it. Such a statement piece, and again, another top layer that will truly keep you warm. It's reversible too (the other side is tan), so you can just flip it inside out for a different look! Throw this poncho on over a cozy long sleeved shirt and leggings for a upscale version of loungewear. Or pair it with a dress and riding boots to feel deliciously equestrian.

Look 3

Floral Jumpsuit / Faux Leather Jacket / Wrap Bracelet

Anybody looking for something to wear to a fall wedding? Look no further! Maurice's has tons of cute dresses and jumpsuits that would be perfect wedding guest options. Depending on how you style it, this jumpsuit would also work for date night, a birthday party, concert, rehearsal dinner, or wedding/baby shower. I love it paired with this faux leather jacket to add some edginess to the florals.

Look 4

White Poncho / Flare Leg Jeans / Hair Scarf

This look is my favorite! Probably because it fits into my 3 C's: cute, casual, and COMFY! This poncho (which comes in a few other colors) is soooo lightweight and soft. I can see myself wearing it with leggings and sneakers just as much as I can see it paired with skinny jeans and boots. These flare legs jeans are also full of stretch, and stretch pants are my most favorite friends.
I also really love the retro vibes of the flare jeans combined with the turquoise necklace and hair scarf. I truly believe I would have thrived in the 70s.

.

Which of these four looks is your favorite? Let me know in the comments section below! Be sure to follow me on Instagram and the LiketoKnow.it app to see more of my Maurice's finds, and reach out if you buy any of these pieces because I'd love to see how you style them!
Happy shopping!

XOXO,
Abby
